Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is a highly effective approach to couples therapy developed in the 1980’s by Sue Johnson in Australia. It encompasses and incorporates the growing body of knowledge about the importance of secure attachment in the success of couples relationships. My job as therapist is to help you to identify your negative interaction patterns with each other including defenses against painful emotional issues that undermine the security of the relationship. When your couple’s negative interaction patterns are identified there is a new awareness of your couples problem. Then, we can proceed to engage communication and emotional expression to promote closeness and intimacy. A more satisfying interaction pattern and relationship can emerge where both partners feel acknowledged and secure with each other.
Work in the EFT framework takes place in 1 1/2 hour sessions, and shows immediate results. A successful couples therapy process can usually be completed in about a 6 months time frame or less.
The result of this work is that your will feel deeper love for each other and be able to safely express it. I recommend this approach and am experienced in guiding you through the step by step process of it.
If you would like to learn more about this approach I recommend the book Hold me Tight by Sue Johnson.
